Sion Kim traces the forms that emerge by acts of repetition, accumulation, and layering of lines. The mind-manifesting drawings are made by repetition of varying pressures and irregularly spaced lines, and the hand-carved clay is layered with Hanji (traditional Korean paper), ink, and pigments. Her works do not intend to create a recognisable image, rather they propose a potential for the forms to be tested and held in motion. Also working with smellscapes configured by accumulation of both natural and artificial scents, the form can afford particular constraints and possibilities. The methods of tracking shapes and arrangements begin with the concrete and particular materials, but forms also emerge as portable aesthetics, travelling across time and space. Kim’s work occupies a space in which forms might arise, be held, or remain suspended.
